Spays & Neuters: All You Need to Know
Did you know that millions of dogs & cats are killed at shelters every year? Too many pets end up in animal shelters and face being put down without a home.
You can make a difference. Spay or neuter your pets to prevent unwanted pregnancies and even reduce the risk of some disorders and cancers. On top of the benefits to your pet, many cities also require or encourage spaying or neutering.
When To Spay/Neuter Your Pet
We provide low cost spays & neuters for dogs & cats of all sizes. Although we don’t require your pet to be a certain age, we recommend waiting until your dog has finished growing. Pets must also have all their vaccinations.
If dogs are spayed or neutered too early, sometimes it can cause growth issues. We recommend using the following chart to make the best decision on when to spay or neuter your pet:
- Smaller-size breeds (terriers, chihuahuas, etc) – 6 to 7 months
- Medium-size breeds (collies, boxers, etc) – 8 to 9 months
- Large-size breeds (german shepherds, golden retrievers) – 10 months to a year
- Largest size breeds (great danes, bernards) – Over a year

Please note that all surgeries require a $40 deposit in order to reserve the appointment. This deposit will go towards the procedure.
If your pet has an increased risk for surgery (such as being an older pet or having existing health problems), we will provide you a tailored quote for your pet based on risk factors.
If your pet is in heat, pregnant, brachycephalic, obese (for spays) or cryptorchid there are additional fees to your spay or neuter price! Please call the clinic for more information regarding these extra costs.

Affordable Irving Spays/Neuters – What Do We Require?
At Low Cost Pet Vet, our goal is to provide great service at affordable prices. We have state-of-the-art equipment, and veterinarians with decades of experience.
We take extreme care with all surgeries, monitoring pets as they recover, and making sure they are doing well before you pick them up. Additionally, since our skilled vet uses stitches under the skin, your pet has little to no risk of opening their surgery site! You don’t even have to return for stitch removal. In fact, since we use local pain medication, most pets barely notice the wound. Typically, we don’t even have to use e-collars for our veterinarian’s skilled spays/neuters.
Our price chart includes all necessary services – we don’t tack on a bunch of fees. With our surgeries, you can expect your quoted price to include:

- Oxygen and gas anesthesia
- Electronic monitoring while under anesthesia

- Complimentary nail trim

Low Cost Pet Vet requires pets to be up to date on all their vaccinations. We also require pets to be free of fleas/ticks. If fleas/ticks are noted on your pet their will be an additional fee for flea/tick control. Dogs must be up to date on heartworm prevention (or have a recent negative heartworm test).
If your pet needs shots, a heartworm test, or flea treatment Low Cost Pet Vet can usually provide those services before or after the surgery at additional charge.

What To Expect With Your Pet's Spay Or Neuter
When you first bring in your pet for surgery, we will start with a pre-anesthetic physical exam. This won’t cost any extra but is important for us to make sure your pet will be able to handle the surgery and there won’t be any complications.*
During the surgery, we will put your pet under gas anesthesia following state-of-the-art anesthesia protocols. We provide external heat support, an oxygen generator, pre-/intra-/and post-operative analgesics, and individual monitoring by surgical nurses with advanced equipment which includes respiratory monitors, EKG, pulse oximetry, and core body temperature.
We don’t charge any extra for any of these services, they come with the spay/neuter price as we consider them all essential for the best care of your pet.
After the surgery, we monitor each pet individually while they recover from the anesthesia.
We take any type of surgery very seriously and always provide the best in quality care for each pet that comes through our doors!
Your Pet’s Spay & Neuter Recovery
Once your pet has recovered from the anesthesia and is acting normally, we send them back with their owners. We provide pain medication and antibiotics at no extra charge to make your pet’s recovery as fast, safe, and painless as possible.
Make sure to limit your pet’s activity and monitor them during the next few days as they recover fully. It’s important that they don’t tear their stitches out. In some cases, we may provide a cone to help if your pet is trying to reach or itch at their stitches.
Your pet should be eating, drinking, and behaving normally 24 hours after surgery. If you have any questions or concerns, call us up!
*If your pet is over 8 years old, is pregnant, in heat, or has medical issues, we may charge extra fees due to the extra risk and caution that we need to take with your pet.
Additional Spay & Neuter Services
On top of what we require, Low Cost Pet Vet does recommend some services as additional insurance. These services would be extra, and we don’t need them for the surgery to be successful. We simply recommend them as an extra measure of security and safety.
IV Fluids
IV fluids are helpful for surgery. They support hydration and blood pressure. Also, they provide our veterinarian immediate access to the bloodstream. (Available for an additional $59)
Bloodwork
Pre-op bloodwork can detect disease that we can’t see with just a physical exam. We strongly recommend bloodwork for older pets (over 7 years of age). Pre-op blood work can be performed prior to the day that surgery is scheduled or on the day of surgery before anesthesia is administered. (Available for an additional $105)
Microchipping
We recommend microchipping for all pets! It’s a permanent form of identification for your pet. We recommend microchipping your pet while they are under anesthesia, and discount microchips during surgery from our normal price of $40 to $29.
Radiographs (X-Rays)
While most surgeries don’t require pre-operative x-rays, radiographs on pets under anesthesia are much better quality. If your pet has symptoms of a condition where radiographs would be useful, they can be done under anesthesia before or after the surgery. Finally, radiographs are a good idea to check for spread of a tumor prior to removal.
Biopsy
If your pet needs to have a growth/lump removed, we can do that as well. If desired, the tumor tissue can then be sent to the lab for evaluation, and to see what additional treatment may be necessary after recovery from surgery.
Note: We make these valuable services available but we don’t require them. If we did, it would force us to more than double our prices. That would be cost prohibitive for many clients.
We do include all services that we feel are necessary in our basic packages. Many clinics actually charge higher base prices and then charge extra for antibiotics and pain medicines; we include these in our lower prices!
